Moving to a new country to buy a business. Immigrant Investor. How to Buy a Business in a new land

Strategies to help you buy a business in another country

Going on vacation is exciting.

But what if your travels are more permanent in nature?

I’ve worked with people…

·       -Moving to Canada to buy businesses.
·       -People moving from America to more tropical places.
·       -Canadians moving to Europe.

All of them suffer the same problems.

It’s hard to know what you don’t know and when you’re ‘from away’ it’s hard to get trustworthy help
to make sure you’re getting the right information.

Especially when dealing with foreign legal, government and/or banking issues.

Here’s my advice for anyone moving from one country to another to buy a business…: https://youtu.be/_GKwS5O_w6A

My Advice to Immigrant Entrepreneurs- How To Buy a Business

Last night I spent 3 hours with a group of newcomers.

India, Israel, China… people from all over.  They’ve decided to pack up and move to a new country and are using entrepreneur immigration programs to do it.

I’ve been speaking to groups like these since 2009 and some of the same topics always come up.

I’ve summarized it in this video where I give my top advice to immigrant entrepreneurs: https://youtu.be/yz037j4grrs

What a fun day spent with a dozen newcomers to Canada.

Today I was in Saint John, NB spending the day teaching my Business Buyer Secrets seminar to a dozen newcomers.  There were attendees from China, Israel and the middle east.

One of the persistent topics of the day was trust.  How do you build trust in a business transaction when you're new to the country and have barriers to overcome when it comes to language?

My best advice to those in attendance was to tear down barriers.  The participants were there to learn how to buy an existing business.  I know that some have plans to start their own new businesses.

I can't imagine the courage it must take to uproot your family and move halfway around the world. Once arrived, then having the gumption to start a new enterprise in a foreign land!  These people were clearly successful in their homelands because they're here on immigrant-investor programs.

So if someone can have the courage to win at home and move to the other side of the planet, then surely one can have the courage to take a modest job where one would be forced to talk to locals every day.  That was my advice to the problem.  Immerse yourself somehow in the local community and force yourself to speak English.  Along the way new friends will be found and trust can be established.

It's often hard to completely trust someone you're going to buy a company from, its a big decision.  What we need though is trust in advisors and friends who can help watch our back.  This advice can go for everyone.

Use seller financing when buying a business to transfer risk

My session on Wednesday with a group of newly arrived immigrants was a full day of 'Business Buyer Secrets.'  One of the biggest secrets in buying a business is how to manage risk by using vendor financing.

I recorded a video with a few thoughts and an explanation of how this works.

Let me know what you think.  Again, more info next week about my online version of 'Business Buyer Secrets' which will be mixed with one-on-one and group coaching.

Helping Immigrants make a wise investment

On Wednesday I spent the day with a group of newly arrived immigrants who are interested in either buying or starting a new business.  I got some great questions and spent most of the day teaching how to use the structure of the business purchase deal to diminish risk for the buyer.

I was really touched when one of the participants sent me this thoughtful email afterwards:

 David C Barnett,
Thank you for the opportunity of sharing your knowledge and expertise about Purchasing and  Buying  an Existing Business with us today. It was insightful and very significant what we've learned from you. By far you went beyond for the presentations and illustrations you did for us to make sure we understood the delivery of each topic. It was very effective and most educational. We appreciate your time with us.
 Sincerely,
Ailen

I have given the 'Business Buyer Secrets' seminar several times a year for the past few years and will be scheduling some dates which will be open to the public soon.

I'm also looking at combining the seminar information with a group coaching process where I'll walk people through the search, evaluation and offer stages over a 3-4 month period with online training seminars.  The program will also include group coaching calls and one-on-one sessions.

The program will be for people who are serious about moving forward and need a little help to avoid procrastination.
